The Commodity Buyer for Metallic Commodity manages the purchase of high complexity production parts for North American manufacturing plant as well as World Material Flow Operations supporting overseas plants. This position will be responsible for setting strategic direction for the assigned Metallic commodity, managing negotiations, and helping achieve the budget, sourcing, closing campaigns, and meeting rationalization targets. The buyer will forecast and report economic savings performance, negotiate price reductions or increases, drive long term agreements, market test, award new business to improve leverage, and analyze various reports to identify cost reduction opportunities. Additionally, the buyer will support special projects as necessary to assist in delivering commodity goals. This role is approximately 70% Strategic / 30% Operational (Focus: Commodity Strategy, Benchmarking, Sourcing Council preparations, mid to upper management presentations, resourcing as needed, Technical Cost reductions, Warranty agreements, managing supplier financial distress, coordination with global teams, supplier capacity management.)
- Lead supplier evaluation, selection, and sourcing for assigned metallic commodities for all North American operations and/or leading/supporting global sourcing projects by working closely with the global commodity team (EMEA, LATAM, APAC).
- Programs: Support function for new product launch initiatives while developing and implementing cost reduction and sourcing strategies through improving parts for new platforms to meet program timing, cost, quality, delivery, and strategic objectives.
- Develop/implement supply base management strategies both regionally and globally that lead to the lowest total cost in terms of quality, lead time, delivery, service, and unit cost. Drive the selection of suppliers, negotiate, and maintain performance to expectations.
- Negotiate, implement, and manage LTA’s (long term agreements) while achieving commercial savings and raw material recovery in order to meet or exceed material cost and total cost reduction objectives and while supporting organizational initiatives. Facilitate supplier/engineering VA/VE activities in order to drive product cost savings and process improvement initiatives to achieve budget performance.
- Provide leadership in and develop an understanding of and insight into the market for the commodities assigned, including industry trends, cost drivers, global pricing, lead-times, technology and manufacturing capability of company suppliers and suppliers in the market that best meet expectations and objectives. Track, monitor, and implement hedges at efficient raw material market conditions to minimize risk.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Business, Supply Chain or related field along with a minimum of 6 years of purchasing experience.
- Ability to travel up to 20% – domestic and international (majority of travel will be domestic)
The preferred candidate will have experience with the following:
- Intermediate level of proficiency in Excel (to include pivot tables and v-look ups)
- Ability to read engineering drawings tied to the fab and weld commodity. Understand part complexity and factors which drive cost and dictate manufacturing process and supplier selection criteria.
- Understand manufacturing BOM structures and general knowledge of applicable materials in the steel commodity and their cost impacts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, negotiation skills, analytical and problem solving skills, and computer skills
- Excellent ability to work as a team within purchasing, other functions, and with locations worldwide
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Knowledge/experience of raw material analysis and tracking systems
- Experience in analyzing, selecting/recommending, approving and auditing suppliers for different product platforms within a multi-plant manufacturing environment, based upon supplier capability relative to designing, supporting, quality and manufacturing
- Strong negotiation background with knowledge of corporate purchasing practices and strategies that bring about closure of long-term agreements reflecting positive results that contribute to organizational/departmental goals
- Experience developing and implementing commodity strategies
- Proven experience in mitigating supplier delivery, cost, and relationship issues with positive outcome for the company
- Ability to facilitate and lead technical and commercial meetings that require multiple cross functional participants

The annual salary for this role is $81,750 – $119,900 plus any applicable bonus (Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as skill, experience and qualification for the role.)
