As a Hardware Design Engineer you will translate customer and system level specifications into hardware specifications, including detailed electrical, mechanical and software design and cost requirements for vehicle and precision electronics products.

  • Translate higher level performance and feature-set targets to detailed hardware specifications for design engineering to follow.
  • Write detailed electrical, mechanical and software requirements including but not limited to mechanical enclosure definition, connectors, number of PCBs, key component selection like microprocessor, memory, display, touch panel, battery, WiFi/BT chips, etc.
  • Participate in new system and hardware project kickoffs with Product Management and Systems Engineering groups.
  • Be the liaison between Hardware Design Engineers, Product Management and Systems Engineering to define and negotiate hardware design and cost targets.
  • Follow top-down requirements flow from customer to systems engineering to the hardware team.
  • Assist in Make vs Buy trade studies and provide recommendations accordingly.
  • Define normal and special qualification and certification requirements for assigned hardware design based on application needs.
  • Partake in hardware design reviews and ensure product development is meeting hardware specifications, as written.
  • Work with project management to generate and update product design and development schedules.
  • Determine purpose, application, and feasibility of new or enhancement of existing products or processes.
  • Keep up to date assigned technical documentation in all phases of the project.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the fields of electrical design, methods, and applications.
  • May assist with quote or request for quote process.
  • May be called upon to perform comparable duties of a similar or related nature and/or assist in other areas as needed.

This position pays: $93,000 – $123,500 plus any applicable bonus (Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as skill, experience and qualification for the role.)

  • Principles of engineering and science attained through BSEE, BSME or similar. Graduate level coursework a plus. MS preferable for higher level positions.

  • 5+ years experience in authoring documentation with detailed technical requirements for products with embedded microprocessors/microcontrollers

  • 5+ years of expertise and prior experience in designing electronic boards with embedded microcontrollers/microprocessors.

  • 5+ years of hardware development involvement in high-speed data network designs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previously completed projects through manufacturing, either OEM or contracted.
  • Ability to read schematics, layout of PCBs, I/O connectors, mechanical design, etc.
  • Firmware knowledge and experience in bringing up and troubleshooting boards.
  • Experience in RF design, simulation and testing (Bluetooth, WiFi).
  • Technical writing ability to prepare specifications, reports, documentation and presentations.
  • High level of customer service skills.
  • Well-developed problem analysis and problem-solving techniques.
  • Proficiency with a computer, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Team player who is self-motivated, and has ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and leadership staff.
