Job Purpose
We are looking for an experienced candidate with background as both legal advisor and in-house counsel for the position of Legal Counsel, Southeast Asia & Japan who will be based in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Legal Counsel is responsible for providing expert legal advice and support to the organization and business with primary scope in SEA & Japan ((which includes among the others Cambodia, Christmas Island, East Timor, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua Nuova Guinea, New Caledonia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vanuatu, Vietnam, etc., hereinafter collectively “SEA” or “Countries”), ensuring compliance with laws and regulations while protecting the company’s interests. This role involves drafting and reviewing contracts, managing legal risks, and advising stakeholders on a wide range of legal matters. The Legal Counsel directly reports to the Legal Manager of SEA & Japan.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance and support on corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to protect the organization’s interests.
- Advise leadership and key stakeholders on legal risks, rights, and obligations related to business activities.
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations, ensuring the company remains compliant across all jurisdictions.
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality legal services.
- Manage dispute resolution, litigation, and other legal proceedings, representing the organization’s interests as required.
- Coordinate with the other members of the legal and compliance team in the other regions in providing legal support to the day-to-day operations of the organization.
- Provide legal support with respect to strategy and mergers & acquisitions or other business initiatives involving the Countries.
- Develop multiple legal options to help the internal clients/colleagues to achieve business objectives and evaluate legal advantages and disadvantages of the various options so to take informed decisions (high focus on business solution-orientation).
- Conduct legal research on legal issues.
- Conduct legal trainings on procedures and legal topics to internal colleagues.
- Other legal related tasks as from time to time assigned.
Experience Required
- Substantial experience working in English (legal written skills & oral presentation skills) in an international environment.
- Extensive legal experience (at least 5 years in total) in international law firm/s and as in-house counsel in multinational group/s
- Substantial legal experience on contract negotiation, drafting, interpretation and contract process management, corporate and regulatory matters as well as on competition (antitrust) law with focus on the automotive, capital goods and similar sectors is a plus.
- Previous experience with multi-country/cross-jurisdictional operations and transactions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Law as minimum
- Fluent in written and spoken English (mandatory) and Thai (mandatory)
- Good knowledge of MS Office applications
- Flexibility and ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, understanding business priorities and needs
- Well organized and able to manage several projects simultaneously and under pressure
- Demonstrated safeguarding ethics and integrity
- Analytical, structured with good attention to details
- Customer focused, business and commercially focused
- Hands-on and cross-functional working aptitude
- Ability to travel
